There are many benefits to selecting a Thermodynamic Steam Trap. With only one moving part, a specially-hardened stainless steel disc, they tend to have a long life. Designed to work in any orientation, performance is easily checked as an audible 'click' can be heard when the disc seats. Also, they able to withstand superheat, waterhammer, freezing, corrosive condensate, and vibration.
Thermodynamic Steam Traps are best suited for steam main distribution drainage and steam tracing applications. They operate by using velocity to open and close a valve, which in this case is a free-floating disc. Upon start-up the incoming pressure raises the disc and the cool condensate and air is immediately discharged. While the hot condensate flows in under the disc, the pressure drops and releases flash steam at a high velocity, drawing the disc toward the seat. At the same time, flash steam builds up the pressure in the chamber above the disc, forcing it down and closes the inlet. When the pressure in the chamber decreases by the condensation of the flash steam, the disc is raised, and the cycle repeats.
