Float and Thermostatic Steam Traps are mechanically operated steam traps for process purposes in which air and other non-condensable gases are removed immediately upon entering the trap through a thermostatically operated air vent. This vent is located inside the body on Spirax Sarco F&T Traps, however, some manufacturers place this air vent externally.
More commonly known as F&T Steam Traps, the main advantage of using this type of trap is its superior air removal capabilities and its ability to automatically adjust to heavy and lights loads.
One downside to selecting an F&T steam trap, really any mechanical trap type, is due to the fact that the power of the float is a constant, the size of the discharge opening goes down as the steam pressure goes up. This means that in order to ensure that the float and lever combination has the ability to generate enough energy to lift the valve head off its seat at the designated operating pressures, you must select the appropriate size for your intended pressure range. Otherwise, the trap can fail to close after being overcome by steam pressure.
