Basket Pipe Strainers

Basket Strainers are also known as pot type strainers due to their overall shape. Strainers are devices used in steam and condensate systems, which prevent debris and other solids flowing liquids or gases from damaging equipment from their harmful effects, thus reducing downtime and maintenance.

Two popular types of Pipe Strainers are Basket Strainers and Y-Type Strainers. Basket strainers are typically larger than Y-Strainers, giving it a greater holding capacity for larger diameter steam pipelines. Of the two, Basket Strainers are the preferred type for liquid applications. When used in steam systems, a significant amount of condensate may form. The drain plug on these basekt strainers can be fitted with a steam trap to remove the condensate.

Basket strainers can only be installed in horizontal pipelines, and for larger, heavier basket strainers, the base of the strainer needs to be supported. Most commonly found in duplex arrangements, a second strainer is placed in parallel with the primary strainer, and the flow can be diverted through either of the two strainers. This allows for the strainer unit to be clearned while it is still in use, reducing the downtime for maintenance.
